Orlando

The undisputed family vacation capital of the world. Four Disney parks, two Universal parks, SeaWorld, LEGOLAND, and dozens of water parks and attractions packed into one sprawling metro. The entire city is engineered around families with kids.

Family Verdict

Purpose-built for families with children of every age. Toddlers have dedicated play areas and rider switch programs. Tweens and teens have world-class thrill rides. Disney's MagicBand system and Universal's app make logistics seamless. The only challenge is decision fatigue โ€” there is simply too much to do.

Best time to visit

Dec-Feb (cooler, lower crowds mid-Jan to Feb), Oct-Nov (Halloween events). Avoid Jun-Aug (extreme heat, humidity, afternoon thunderstorms, peak prices).

Getting around

You need a car or rely on hotel shuttles. Disney provides free buses, monorail, and Skyliner gondola between its resorts and parks. Universal has walking paths and water taxis between its hotels and parks. Lyft/Uber are widely available. I-Drive Trolley covers International Drive attractions for $2. Strollers are available for rent at every park, but bringing your own saves $20-35/day.

Insider Tips

  • โ€ขDownload the My Disney Experience and Universal Orlando apps before your trip โ€” you'll use them constantly for wait times, mobile ordering, Lightning Lane, and virtual queues.
  • โ€ขMid-January through mid-February is the sweet spot โ€” lower crowds, cooler weather, cheaper hotels, and most attractions are fully operational.
  • โ€ขTake a midday break โ€” return to your hotel from 12-3pm when parks are hottest and most crowded, then go back for evening hours. This is the single most impactful strategy for families.
  • โ€ขBring your own stroller to parks โ€” rental strollers are hard plastic with no recline or storage. Bring a fan clip and shade cover.
  • โ€ขMobile order every meal in Disney parks โ€” it saves 20-40 minutes per meal compared to standing in regular lines.
  • โ€ขSet up Amazon delivery to your hotel โ€” diapers, water bottles, snacks, and sunscreen are marked up 300% at parks and resort gift shops.
  • โ€ขDisney character meet-and-greets have their own scheduling โ€” check the app for times. Many characters now have 'surprise' appearances rather than fixed times.

Common Mistakes

  • โ€ขTrying to do all four Disney parks in four days with no rest โ€” you'll burn out by day two. Build in a pool day or non-park day between park days.
  • โ€ขNot making dining reservations 60 days out โ€” popular restaurants like Be Our Guest, Ohana, and Boma fill up immediately. Set an alarm for your booking window.
  • โ€ขBuying Genie+ or Lightning Lane for every day โ€” it's only worth it on the busiest days (holidays, weekends). On lower crowd days, wait times are manageable without it.
  • โ€ขSkipping EPCOT because 'it's boring for kids' โ€” the new rides (Guardians, Remy, Frozen) and World Showcase passport stamp experience make it one of the best parks for families now.
  • โ€ขPacking jeans and heavy clothes โ€” even in December, Orlando averages 72F. Pack shorts and layers. The one exception is evening outdoor rides where wind chill can make it feel cool.

Packing Tips

  • โ€ขPonchos from the dollar store โ€” afternoon thunderstorms are almost daily May-Sep, and park ponchos cost $15+
  • โ€ขPortable phone charger โ€” park apps drain batteries fast and you need your phone for Lightning Lane, mobile ordering, and wait times
  • โ€ขCooling towels and a small spray fan โ€” even in winter, Florida sun is strong during midday
  • โ€ขComfortable broken-in shoes โ€” you will walk 10-15 miles per park day on concrete
  • โ€ขAutograph book and thick Sharpie marker โ€” characters can't grip thin pens with their gloves
