San Diego

America's finest city for families โ€” world-class zoo, miles of beaches, LEGOLAND, perfect weather, Mexican food that rivals the source, and a relaxed SoCal vibe that makes every day feel like vacation. The combination of beach, culture, and kid attractions is unmatched in the US.

Family Verdict

Arguably the single best family vacation city in America. The San Diego Zoo alone is worth the trip. Add in LEGOLAND, beaches, Balboa Park's free museums, and incredible fish tacos, and you have a destination that works for toddlers through teenagers. The weather is almost comically perfect in summer.

Best time to visit

Jun-Sep (warm, virtually no rain, beach weather). May and Oct are excellent shoulder months. Year-round mild climate makes any month workable.

Getting around

A rental car is essential โ€” San Diego is spread out. Traffic is much lighter than LA. Parking is generally free or cheap outside downtown. The Coaster commuter rail runs along the coast (Oceanside to downtown) and is scenic. Old Town Trolley is tourist-oriented but fun for kids. Beach communities are walkable once you park.

Insider Tips

  • โ€ขJune Gloom is real โ€” mornings in June (and sometimes May and July) are often foggy and overcast until noon, then the sun burns through. Don't panic if your first morning is gray.
  • โ€ขThe San Diego CityPass covers the Zoo, LEGOLAND, and SeaWorld at a big discount โ€” worth it if you're doing 3+ attractions.
  • โ€ขMexican food in San Diego rivals Tijuana โ€” fish tacos, California burritos (with french fries inside), and street-style tacos are the local specialties. Skip chain restaurants entirely.
  • โ€ขSunset Cliffs in Ocean Beach has the most spectacular sunset viewpoint in San Diego โ€” free, dramatic cliff-top views. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset. Hold small children's hands near the edge.
  • โ€ขThe Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve offers easy coastal hiking trails with stunning ocean views โ€” the Guy Fleming Trail is a flat loop perfect for families with strollers.
  • โ€ขBring or buy a boogie board โ€” bodyboarding is the quintessential San Diego kid beach activity. Mission Beach and La Jolla Shores have the best beginner waves.

Common Mistakes

  • โ€ขTrying to combine San Diego with Disneyland (Anaheim) โ€” they're 2 hours apart in traffic. Pick one per trip or budget a full travel day between them.
  • โ€ขSpending all your time at SeaWorld when the San Diego Zoo is significantly better. The zoo is world-class; SeaWorld is fine but not a must-do.
  • โ€ขSkipping Old Town San Diego โ€” the free historic park has good Mexican restaurants, shops, and California history exhibits. It's touristy but worthwhile for an afternoon.
  • โ€ขNot checking tide charts for tidepooling โ€” Cabrillo and La Jolla tidepools require low tide. A high-tide visit means empty pools and disappointment.
  • โ€ขEating only at waterfront restaurants โ€” the best food in San Diego is at strip-mall taco shops, dive bars, and food trucks. Follow the locals.

Packing Tips

  • โ€ขSunscreen and hats โ€” San Diego sun is intense even with the coastal breeze masking the heat
  • โ€ขBeach gear โ€” sand toys, boogie boards, and beach towels (or buy cheap at Mission Beach shops)
  • โ€ขLight layers โ€” mornings can be foggy and cool ('June Gloom' is real), but afternoons are warm
  • โ€ขWater shoes โ€” tidepools at La Jolla and Cabrillo are rocky
  • โ€ขSwimsuits that can double as activity wear โ€” you'll go from beach to zoo to dinner
